Avoiding Common Summer Injuries

June 28, 2024

Summer marks the peak season for outdoor sports and recreation, but unfortunately, it’s also peak season for injuries. The orthopedist at Nutley Orthopaedic Group wants our patients to take advantage of all the outdoor fun, while also properly preparing to avoid the aches, pains, and serious injuries commonly experienced at this time of year.

  • Heat exhaustion and stroke can occur during any strenuous activity in hot weather. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before, during, and after activity, take breaks in the shade, and avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day. If you feel faint, dizzy, fatigued, have low blood pressure when you stand, and your skin feels cool and moist, immediately move to a cool place and begin rehydrating. Promptly seek medical help if symptoms continue.
  • Ankle sprains often occur during activities like basketball, soccer, and running. Wear supportive shoes with good ankle stability, Warm up beforehand and stretch your ankles. If you suffer a sprain, use rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) for the first few days. If the symptoms persist, schedule a visit with our orthopedist.
  • Rotator cuff injuries to the shoulder area occur in sports that involve repetitive overhead motions, such as swimming, tennis, and baseball. Use specific exercises to strengthen your rotator cuff muscles gradually before going full-tilt. Warm up and stretch your shoulders before activity. Maintain good posture during activities. If you experience shoulder pain, stop the activity, apply ice and use a sling for support if needed. If the pain persists, schedule a visit to the orthopedist.

The orthopedist at Nutley Orthopaedic Group wants you to savor summer to the fullest, without an injury that can sideline you for the season. That means preparing for your favorite outdoor activity by building up slowly and taking the necessary precautions. It’s the perfect time to schedule a visit to assess your fitness level and discuss any concerns. Please contact us today for an appointment.
